Fr. Mike Mayo Clinic Update

I had a good week at Mayo Clinic. I met with Dr. Dyck, one of the teaching staff of neurology. Following that I had another MRI of the lumber region of my back. The next day I had several tests including an EMG to check the nerve sensitivity of my legs. On the final day I met once again with Dr. Dyck and he discussed the findings of the tests.

The MRI showed moderate to advanced lumbar canal stenosis with effacement of the thecal sac and narrowing at L1 and L2 levels due to retrolisthesis, spondylitic ridging and prominent epidural fat. There was advanced narrowing in the left L4 neural foraminal due to facet joint hypertrophy and spondylitic ridging.

In terms that I understood it meant that I had spinal stenosis and that is what is causing my pain upon standing and while walking. It is also causing symptoms like neuropathy, but after all the tests the doctor told me that if I had a “nickels worth” of neuropathy he would be surprised. His recommendation is that I consult with a neurosurgeon (he recommended one) to pursue surgery that will address the stenosis. I go back to Mayo Clinic in May to have the consultation with the surgeon. Hopefully he will be able to perform the appropriate surgery in the near future.

As always I will keep you apprised of what is going on with me, all the while enjoying your prayer and support as I navigate this road to better health.
