Transfiguration - Experiencing Jesus through the Senses

Solomon becomes a follower of Astarte (god of the Canaanites and Phoenicians). He moves from the glory of his youthful wisdom to the overindulgence of his passions.

In case you were wondering about how my article ended last week; above my column heading is the last (half omitted) sentence.

Saint Peter writes: We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.

For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.

In Peter’s letter, which was read for the second reading today, we see how he was compelled to move from the command of Jesus after the resurrection: "Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead" to the present moment as he writes to the first Christian communities.  He writes: I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders, since I know that the time for taking off this tent is coming soon….And I shall take great care that after my own departure you will still have a means to recall these things to memory. (2Pt1:14-15)

How amazing it is that the unseen God would find a way to make His presence known in the only way a human being could perceive it, through our senses! Peter, James and John saw Jesus begin to radiate a brilliant light (His face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light). They heard Jesus converse with Moses and Elijah. They felt the coolness of a great cloud that overshadowed them and heard a voice from the cloud.

Because they experienced all this it was etched into their very being. This would be an experience they never forgot, and as we see; it becomes for Peter his surety and his duty to pass this on to the next generations of Christians. God the creator and sustainer of all reality has fulfilled his promise of the psalm 89: “ I will appoint him to be my firstborn son, the most exalted of the earth's kings.”  This great revelation continues to behanded on to us to carry to the next generations. Our God comes to us in a way that we can know him. He feeds us real food and drink: His Body and Blood. And in our reception we carry Him in our bodies so that we can introduce him to others.
