Elementary Faith Formation Projects

Faith Forming Activity #4 - Social Justice

We are always striving to make the world a better place and we have a simple social justice project you might like to be a part of!  We want to spread a message of love, hope, and kindness to our friends at Stepping Stone Emergency Shelter and the people at Loaves and Fishes in St. Paul.  Here’s what you’ll need:

  • plastic zip baggies
  • store bought cookies (like Oreos; cookies without nuts are preferred)
  • small slips of paper with your messages of kindness, love, and hope (Thinking of you!  You are loved!  Have a wonderful day!)

We ask that you wear a mask and gloves when doing this for health safety.  Put 3 cookies in a baggie, slip in your note of kindness, love and hope and seal it up.  Drop off at church inside Door 4 Atrium (by the Faith Formation wing).  We will have a collection bin there.  Make as many as you like – we serve dinner to about 60 people once a month at Stepping Stones and about 130 people at Loaves and Fishes so we need lots of these cards and cookies.

Thanks for making the world a better place St. Joe’s!  We miss you!  Please let me know if you have any questions - [email protected]

Faith Forming Activity #1

Create a Prayer Space at home using some items from around the house and to draw some "happy" artwork that reminds us to rejoice and be thankful.  The Prayer Space can be a small space in any room that is designated for prayer--remember, prayer comes in a variety of forms!  A shoe box or brown paper bag might be helpful to keep the items together.  I plan to keep the activities simple but hopefully they will occupy your kids for a little while and have them think about their Faith and God's love for us!

Faith Forming Kids Activity #2:

  • For the Younger Kids: Watch Brother Francis Video-Let's Learn About Lent (about 10 min)
  • For the Older Kids:  Watch Ryan Defrates Secret Agent--Exploding Hot Sauce. (about 25 min)
  • For All Kids:  Brother Francis--He is Risen!  The Power of the Resurrection. (about 30 min)

The videos listed above will require help from you to get things started with a free St. Joe's subscription to FORMED.  As a parishioner at  St. Joe's, everyone receives a free subscription to FORMED.

FORMED is a catholic website that has videos, prayer, and thousands of resources for home use.  St. Joe's has an account and the service is free for all parishioners.  There is a "kids" section that includes some great video shorts--Brother Francis is one of my favorites.

To begin, go to:

  • If you are new, go to “sign up.”
  • Choose “I belong to a parish organization" and click  “next.”
  • CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT: Find your parish (type in St. Joseph Church 171 Elm Street, Lino Lakes)
  • Click on our parish name and go to “next.”
  • Type in your name and email address and click on “sign up” and you are enrolled!
  • To re-enter, go to “Sign in” at the top right and follow prompts.
From the Formed main page, please scroll down to the "kids" section and look for Brother Francis or the Ryan Defrates videos.  There are several video options.

Faith Forming Activity #3 - Charity toward Others

Looking for a relaxing family project or a quiet project for your kids?  Here is a great project for a great cause!  Please help us reach our goal of making and donating 100 tissue paper flowers for residents of an assisted living home!  A tutorial is available by clicking on the picture below.

Please drop off your finished flowers in the Atrium Entrance (door 4) by Thursday, May 21.  If you’d like to help but don’t have  the materials (tissue paper, scissor, fuzzy stems or ribbon) please send me an email and we can provide them to you.

Please let me know if you have questions! Take care and thank you, Kelly Thurmes
