Together in Spirit

Lent Starts Wednesday!

The great penitential season of Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday. Now is the time to discern our Lenten disciplines. The three pillars of Lenten Spiritual practice are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The Gospel on Ash Wednesday focuses on these spiritual practices. The Church encourages each of us to pick something from each area to do during Lent.

We’re all familiar with giving something up, like candy, or chocolate, or beverages, etc. but one good way to fast in our day and age is to limit or refrain from screen time, as so many of us are so attached to our phones (myself included). For prayer, please consider coming to daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, praying a rosary daily at home, Bible study, or joining a Lenten small faith sharing group.

For almsgiving we’ll have a few special collections as opportunities to go over and above our usual giving for those in need, but each of us can also choose to do something else extra to help those in need.

Whatever you decide, the time is now to do it because Lent always goes by faster than we realize and before you know it, it will be Easter!

Stations of the Cross

Join us for Stations of the Cross each Friday during Lent at 6:30 pm in the Church. I’m excited to be there and I hope that you can join us in this ancient prayer form in which we unite ourselves to the Lord’s journey to the Cross at Calvary. The Stations usually last about 30 minutes, and it’s a beautiful way to stay prayerfully centered during Lent.

Lenten Blessings,

Fr. Deziel
