Habemus Papem!!!

Habemus Papem!!!

We were all shocked to learn the incredible news that our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV is from America, and not only that, but from not-too-distant Chicago! His has Midwestern roots like us here at St. Joe’s! It’s surreal!

Personally, I’m trying to wrap my head around the fact that he and I attended the same seminary in Chicago—Catholic Theological Union. I never would have imagined that I would have gone to the same school as a Pope! How is that possible? He finished his studies eleven years before I began, so our paths never crossed, but we had some of the same professors, sat in the same classrooms, and walked the same halls. It’s just crazy to grasp!

It seems like popes are supposed to come from distant countries, speak unfamiliar languages, and carry a mystique that you can’t put into words. The mystique this time is how God can take what seems common and elevate it to something extraordinary! Mary’s song, “the Magnificat” proclaims God has lifted up the lowly  (Luke 1:52).

God desires to lift us all to great things, most notably, to himself. When you look at the path of Pope Leo it involved humbling himself to leave his homeland to serve the poor in a poor country proclaiming Christ to them.

May God Bless our new Holy Father, Pope Leo! May our prayers assist him in the great calling that God has given to him. May his election remind us that God is calling all of us to a new and more abundant life in Him. May Pope Leo have every grace needed to shepherd the flock to ever greater faith, holiness, and love on earth, to one day rejoice forever in heaven!

Your servant in Christ,

Fr. Deziel
