We all have a part in His Church

Can you believe it - the asparagus is already producing and someone just came in with a big handful for me! It is my favorite vegetable to eat. It makes for a happy day at dinner tonight as I cook up some chicken and the rest of the meal.

You are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.  1Pt 2:9

As Peter writes he is addressing all of us, not just a special group of the holiest and most enlightened. We are that chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own. In some ways I think we have lost this most profound recognition of who we are. We get caught up in our brokenness and failures and figure that is only the most special people who are part of Peter’s declaration. Although I have the highest regard for those that the Church has named as saints, in some way I think their honor obscures what Peter is telling all of us.

We are all what Peter describes so that we may announce the praises of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. The more we recognize who we are the more we will be inclined to do our part to make God known and loved. It is not just a trained theologian who can do this; it is each of us as we recognize the greatness of God’s love in our lives. We might not be too profound in our manner of announcing His goodness, but by virtue of speaking to our experience God will use us to turn people to Himself. This is God working through us, even as He has been readying the heart of the one we might be speaking to. We all have our part in the drama of God continuing to grow His Church.
