My 4th of July Story

Thank you for your prayers and notes of encouragement as I take this trip with the medical community.

Some pre-history: about two years ago I began to struggle with sores on my right leg. I was diagnosed with cellulitis and prescribed an anti-biotic. I took the medicine faithfully, but the infection continued. Future appointments with my personal doctor and dermatologist resulted in similar outcomes – not a complete healing of the sore.

A week ago Saturday I woke up with aches in my joints, a temperature of 101.5, and was short of breath. I found it difficult to walk from my room to the living room. I called Andrea to warn her that I may not be able to do Mass that evening. A little later in the morning I got a call from another parishioner who suggested that I get a COVID test. When I called a testing place to get an appointment and went through an interview process the nurse suggested that I immediately head to the emergency room due to my shortness of breath. I went to St. John’s and was admitted. They began to treat my many issues. Four days later, they were successful in getting my blood pressure down through use of medications, began to move the fluids off my lungs and legs through use of diuretics and treated my infected right leg with a variety of antibiotics.  The source of my fever was a MRSA infection in my right leg. My fever finally broke and the swelling in my leg began to recede quickly only after they identified the type of infection. I am grateful for modern medicine!

Two negative COVID-19 tests later, (one on Saturday and one on Monday), I was able to head home on Tuesday. It was 4 days of medical treatment that I am happy to have behind me, but also happy to have the relief.

That was my Fourth of July weekend – I pray that yours was less eventful!
