Snow in April?!?

It has been many years since last we faced such an epic snowstorm. I had a funeral on Saturday morning and decided to stay for the afternoon Mass. I watched the snow fall but I had no idea of how bad the driving had become. By four fifteen in the afternoon several people arrived, one shaking with anger asking why we didn’t cancel the Mass. As they brought this up I realized that anyone driving would be putting themselves at risk. That was when I made the decision to cancel the weekend Masses and to dispense all of you from your Sunday obligation. I know it was a good decision, but I made it too late and for that I am sorry, especially to any and all who made the great attempt to get to church on Saturday night.

Once the blizzard warning was issued I should have canceled the Masses and in the future that is when I will do it. There are too many of you who drive great distances to Mass I and hope that you will use common sense. Plus, there will be those who believe that missing Sunday Mass is an automatic mortal sin. By giving you dispensation you are already forgiven for missing last weekend’s Mass. There is no need to go to confession for missing last Sunday’s Mass.

In driving back to my apartment I found it almost impossible to see the road or the traffic lights. As I got fairly close I missed the road and drove over a median which trapped my car. After a Ramsey County sheriff stopped by and told me to call a tow truck I found myself thinking it would take me hours before one would come. As I went through my list of friends in my phone I realized I had the Brausen’s phone number and when I called they responded to me immediately and had a truck come over to pull me out. I want to publicly thank them for their care for me. With being stuck it took me two hours to get back to my apartment. It was not a good evening to be driving for anyone.

Hopefully in the coming weeks we will begin complaining about the heat rather than the cold and snow.
